Our Approach to Addiction Treatment

Addiction Is Complicated. It Rarely Shows Up Alone. And It Doesn’t Respond to One-Size-Fits-All Care.

Clinically reviewed by Daniel Lewis, MD, Board Certified Addiction Medicine

At Yellow Wood Recovery, serving adults in the Sacramento and Rancho Cordova area, our approach is built around a simple but often overlooked truth: lasting recovery requires treating the whole person. That means addressing not only substance use, but also mental health conditions, trauma history, medical needs, and the real-world circumstances that shape recovery.

This is integrated, physician-led care. It guides everything we do.

Physician-Led, Integrated Care

Our treatment model is guided by four board-certified physicians who specialize in addiction psychiatry and addiction medicine and are actively involved in day-to-day clinical care.

Medical and psychiatric oversight is embedded throughout treatment, not added as an afterthought. Physicians work closely with therapists, nurses, and case managers to ensure care remains coordinated, responsive, and aligned with each person’s changing needs.

This structure allows us to address complexity safely and thoughtfully, particularly for individuals with co-occurring mental health conditions, prior treatment experiences, or medical concerns.

What Makes Our Program Different

Many treatment centers talk about individualized care. We are structured to deliver it consistently.

Board-Certified Addiction Psychiatrists on Staff

Our psychiatrists are not occasional consultants. They are integrated members of the treatment team, specializing in addiction psychiatry and the treatment of co-occurring mental health conditions. They collaborate closely with clinical staff to support stabilization, insight, and long-term recovery planning.
Unlike programs that rely on external psychiatric consultation, our model embeds psychiatric care throughout treatment, allowing for closer collaboration, continuity, and real-time adjustments as needs change.

Physician-Led Care Across Levels of Acuity

Our medical team brings experience treating individuals across a wide range of clinical needs, including withdrawal management, psychiatric stabilization, and ongoing medication support. This breadth allows us to respond effectively when symptoms change or complications arise.

Integrated Treatment for Co-Occurring Disorders

Substance use and mental health conditions often reinforce one another. Treating them separately can lead to fragmented care and higher relapse risk. From the beginning of treatment, we address addiction and mental health together through a coordinated, multidisciplinary approach.

Evidence-Based Therapies That Guide Care

Treatment is grounded in approaches supported by research and clinical practice, including:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
  • Trauma-Informed Therapy and EMDR
  • Motivational Interviewing (MI)
  • Internal Family Systems (IFS)
  • Contingency Management
  • Mindfulness-Based Interventions
  • Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) when clinically appropriate

What Integrated Care Looks Like in Practice

In practice, integrated care means patients are not referred out for psychiatric needs or left navigating multiple systems on their own. Psychiatric providers are involved early and work closely with therapy and medical teams to adjust care as symptoms evolve.

Treatment plans are developed through comprehensive assessment and are reviewed and updated regularly based on clinical progress, patient feedback, and changing needs. This ongoing coordination helps reduce gaps in care and supports continuity throughout treatment.

When appropriate and with the patient’s consent, our psychiatric team collaborates with outside providers, including a patient’s existing psychiatrist, to support continuity of care during treatment and transition planning.

Our Treatment Philosophy

The quality of treatment depends on the people delivering it. Our multidisciplinary team includes:

Addiction Is a Medical Condition

Addiction alters brain function in ways that make stopping extraordinarily difficult without help. We approach treatment as medical care, grounded in science, compassion, and respect, not judgment.

Recovery Is Personal

Recovery does not look the same for everyone. For some, it includes long-term medication support; for others, it does not. We work collaboratively to define goals and build a plan that supports stability, health, and quality of life.

Families Matter

Addiction affects more than one person. When appropriate and with consent, we involve families through education and therapeutic support to improve understanding, communication, and recovery support beyond treatment.

Treatment Is the Beginning

Recovery continues after formal treatment ends. We emphasize preparation for what comes next through aftercare planning, step-down levels of care, connection to community resources, and alumni support.

We provide a complete range of services so individuals can progress through treatment without changing providers or starting over.
